Beginning in 2014, the Point Place and Shoreland communities have enjoyed a landmark known as “The Anchors of the Community Memorial”, a name coined by then District Six City Councilwoman Lindsay Webb. The project was originally suggested by attorney James Nowak as a memorial to recognize past outstanding area leaders as well as to garner donations supporting our Point Place Business Association Community Foundation.
Past community leaders are memorialized with inset engraved pavers much like those presently surrounding our Gateway Lighthouse located on North Summit Street. The memorial is located just north of the Lighthouse.
The monument is designed to celebrate the nautical theme of our communities. It commemorates past community leaders who have provided significant community service with engraved pavers embedded in the granite sundial design on the monument perimeter. Beginning in January of the even years, the Point Place Business Association Community Foundation solicits names of deceased community leaders to be potentially honored with an Anchor of the Community memorial paver. The Foundation votes on the nominees at the March meeting. Those memorial pavers are installed in the Spring of that year, with a ceremony remembering our area’s leaders.
